Unconventional Celebration: A steamed rice cake surprise

On April Fool's Day, I celebrated my 37th birthday with a delicious and unique treat. As I reflected on my life's journey and searched for my purpose, I was surprised by unexpected moments and heartwarming experiences.

I hadn't planned anything special for the day. However, thanks to my wonderful mother, it turned out to be one of the most memorable birthdays I've ever had.

Instead of a lavish celebration, my mother surprised me with small, thoughtful gestures that warmed my heart. She crafted a cake using cooked, steamed rice, moulding it into a makeshift cake shape using a bowl. It was a simple yet meaningful gesture that meant the world to me.

To add a touch of birthday magic, my mother rummaged through the pantry and found some forgotten birthday candles. She placed them atop the rice cake, held it out to me, and sang "Happy Birthday" with all the love in her heart. I blew out the candles, although I must admit I forgot to make a wish. But then again, I've never been one to believe in wishes. Still, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude for my mother's kindness.

My mother and I enjoyed the homemade steamed rice cake, pairing it with canned sardines and a loaf. Despite our hunger, we savoured every bite, relishing the simple joy of being together.

As I reflect on this unexpected celebration, I've come to realize that purpose can be found in the most unexpected places - even in a cake made of cooked steamed rice. It's a reminder that the beauty of life lies in everyday moments and the bonds of family.

So, as I continue on my journey, I carry with me the knowledge that it's the small gestures and shared moments that truly matter. And for that, I am forever grateful to my mother for making my birthday one to remember.
